WARNING: Damaging winds forecast for Zululand coastal areas

The heavy weather is expected from midnight on Sunday until midday on Monday

BATTEN down the hatches and secure what could fly away as a level 2 warning for damaging winds has been issued by the SA Weather Service (SAWS).

Set to affect Mandeni, uMfolozi, uMlalazi, uMhlathuze, KwaDukuza and eThekwini, the warning is in place from midnight tonight (Sunday) to midday tomorrow.

Winds of between 70 and 80km/h are predicted, with wave heights of about 4-6m expected along the coast.

The strong southwesterly winds will start at Port Edward in the south, spreading northwards to Richards Bay and beyond, and die down in the afternoon.

These winds are the result of a fast-moving cold front that made landfall to the southern Cape this morning.

This could cause localised damage to infrastructure, including walkways, pipelines, road and rail routes, and disrupt harbour activities for a short time.

The weather service said caution must be exercised in affected areas, and people are to avoid starting fires as they will spread quickly.
