South Africans are not quite pleased with a government decision to erect a 100-metre high flag structure at Freedom Park in Pretoria that will cost the country millions.
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, however, defends the R22 million flag project, emphasising that the flag will serve as a way to deepen social cohesion in our country.

He further explained the monumental flag will light up in the night.
A number of South Africans voiced their outrage on social media platforms including, celebrity and award winning TV Host, Bonang Matheba who said the minister should be fired.
The minister is reportedly now reviewing his monumental flag project.
You have no clue what you’re doing. Go away! @NathiMthethwaSA

Nathi Mthethwa's timing is off, now it's not the time to erect expensive monuments. People in the entertainment space have lost jobs, the economy is struggling & erecting monuments is a bad idea at this point. When we have recovered, you can erect your flag but not now. Wa baeza.

Nathi Mthethwa went on national TV to say that the flag will be visible by day and light up at night because “education must be ongoing”.
