Big 5 Hlabisa to insource minor road maintenance

The municipality recently officially launched the plant for the maintenance and repairing of access roads

Big 5 Hlabisa Municipality has procured a TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe) and tipper truck which will be used to maintain and repair local access roads.

Mayor Comfort Khumalo said this was done to reduce the amount of time and money spent when such work is outsourced.

The municipality recently officially launched the plant for the maintenance and repairing of access roads, including the tarring of some of the roads in the area.

The TLB will also be used to clear dumpsites within the municipality.

Khumalo said the tipper truck cost R1.2-million, while the TLB cost R1.1-million.

‘We bought this equipment so we can do the smaller jobs ourselves. We will still go to tender for the maintenance and repairing of the big roads,’ Khumalo said.

The access roads include those in the towns of Hlabisa and Hluhluwe, as well as those leading to residents’ homes and schools in the area, the mayor said.

One of the roads which will be prioritised is in Hluhluwe where water collects in front of shops near the station after heavy rains.
