Second rabies case for uThungulu

Important to vaccinate pets against rabies

A SECOND case of rabies has been reported in the eShowe area and the state vet urges pet owners to have their animals vaccinated.

uThungulu state vet with the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Dr Johan Blignaut, has reported the second rabies case for the year in the district.

A dog was found to be rabid in the rural area near eShowe/Mphendle.

The dog was identified during the rabies vaccination campaign being carried out in the area by the Animal Health Technicians from the Veterinarian Services.

They came across some people whose dogs had been attacked by a stray dog.

The stray was euthanised and the brain was sent away for laboratory tests.

They were unable to determine if there was any human contact.

The rabies vaccination campaigns are presently underway in the uMlalazi municipal area and will continue in April.

Dr Blignaut encourages all pet owners to have their pets vaccinated either at a private vet, one of the SPCAs or during these departmental campaigns.

To date, the turnout has been good, although rainy weather and rabies vaccination campaigns do not go well together.

The state vet personnel will be continuing rabies campaigns in the following uMlalazi Municipal areas:

• Monday, 10 March

Mamba, Middledrift

• Tuesday, 11 March

Oyaya (isitilo, Madidima), Isilambo
