Afternoon thunderstorms for Zululand region

Communities are urged to exercise extreme caution during the bad weather conditions

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit most parts of the Zululand region this afternoon (Friday) until late tonight.

Communities and motorists in uMhlathuze, Mtubatuba, Ulundi, Pongola and other parts of the region are urged to exercise extreme caution during the bad weather conditions which could lead to localised flooding and possible fire incidents caused by lightning.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) earlier today issued a yellow level 2 warning for KZN as it forecast isolated showers and thunder showers over much of the province this afternoon, with 60% showers and thunder showers expected across the northern parts of the province.

This is caused by a surface trough situated over the central part of the country, with a coastal low beginning to move along the KZN south coast from this afternoon as the surface high ridges in from the east.

Potential impacts include
• Damage to infrastructure both formal and informal
• Localised flooding and fire incidents
• Accidents on wet and slippery roads with poor visibility
