THE 2021/22 sailing season opened in style with a fleet of 25 well decorated boats at the Zululand Yacht Club last Sunday.

In perfect weather conditions, Clinton Gauld conducted the briefing at which all vessels were notified of the procedure to follow the NSRI sea rescue craft 19A.

The yachties then proceeded to the foreshore for the traditional blessing of the waters by Chaplain Mark Classen, followed by the official flag ceremony which was led by the First Richards Bay Sea Scouts.

At 2pm, a flotilla of all 25 vessels was formed behind the NSRI sea rescue craft to pay respects to incoming commodore Gert Le Roux.

Commodore Le Roux was aboard the NSRI’s Spirit of Richards Bay, and returned the salute.

Once formalities were out of the way, the water fights began before the vessels returned to shore for a fun day of music by The Mediators and food prepared by Joanne Goesen.

The best-dressed boat went to Red Amber, skippered by Christo Schoeman, and the most spirited went to Dockside, skippered by Dain Adamson.
