N2 cash-in-transit suspects appearing in court

According to police reports, a CIT vehicle was travelling from Jozini to Empangeni when it came under attack at about 6.30pm, 28km away from the Mkhuze police station.

SIX suspects have been arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery and attempted murder which took place on the N2 near Mkhuze on Tuesday evening.

According to police reports, a CIT vehicle was travelling from Jozini to Empangeni when it came under attack at about 6.30pm, 28km away from the Mkhuze police station.

‘At least 10 men armed with high-calibre weapons opened fire on the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle landed up in the bushes next to the roadside,’ said police spokesperson Captain Senzo Gumede.

‘The driver was shot in the leg, and the attackers pulled him and his crew out of the vehicle.’

The guards were robbed of their service pistols, and explosives were used to blow open the back of the van.

The suspects took two containers of cash and sped away in four high-end cars.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the six suspects – aged between 36 and 48 – were arrested in the eSikhaleni area.
The docket was handed over to the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.
The suspects are appearing in the Ubombo Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday).
