Triathletes gear up for Ironman in Buffalo City

Buffalo city will welcome the Ironman 70.3 South Africa for the fourteenth consecutive year this weekend

After months of rigid training regimes, triathletes will finally get a chance to test their fitness levels as they compete in the popular Ironman 70.3 South Africa on Sunday (5 September) at Orient Beach.

This year’s event marks the fourteenth consecutive year Buffalo City has played host, and will see athletes take on a 1.9km swim, 90.1km cycle and a 21.1km run.

Defending champion, Matt Trautman will have his hands full when he competes in an all-South African pro field which will see talented youngsters pushing the limits.

The race starts with a challenging 1.9km swim at Orient Beach, which is protected by the breakwaters of East London’s harbour.

Athletes will then climb into the saddle for a 90.1km bike course over a number of hills.

Road closures will allow athletes to safely navigate the course while enjoying the inherent beauty of the landscape.

Finally, it’s the tough two-loop 21.1km run course along the beachfront and up Bunkers Hill, before coming back down to finish at the Orient Theatre Complex.
