KZN dam levels take another dip
Most dams in the province remain above average, even amid the decline in overall water storage capacity
DAM levels in KwaZulu-Natal took yet another dip this week, with provincial water storage sitting at 69.4% from last week’s 70.1%. This is according to the KZN Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) weekly report.

Goedertrouw dam near eShowe shifted from 72.6% to 72.2% while Hluhluwe dam, which was at 90.6% last week is now at 89.9% this week.
Pongolapoort also recorded a decline, from 57.2% to this week’s 56.9%.
‘We attribute the declines to the dry winter season.
‘However, we hope the province’s dam levels will see an improvement as we bid this season goodbye and await the summer rains,’ said DWS spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.
Ratau said the notable decline should, however, not prompt residents to become concerned, as most of KZN’s dams are still above average, even amid the decline in the overall water storage capacity.
‘Spioenkop dam on the Tugela River is presently at 97.7% from last week’s 98.2%, while Woodstock dam has also taken a dip, from 86.6% to 82.8%,’ he said.
Ratau further called on residents to report water leaks and infrastructure vandalism as these are often contributors to the amount of fresh water which is being lost in the country.
