Even Mtunzini made the record books when it dipped below its own 28-year low-temperature record last Thursday night.

Making the most of the big winter freeze, many South Africans went in search of snow.

Social media was awash with photographs of snow chasers who had headed to the most affected places; even as close as the Drakensberg mountain range.

One couple posted photographs of an igloo they constructed at the top of the Perdekop hiking trail in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve on the Franschhoek Pass in the Western Cape.

Snow Report SA tracked down Wilroux and his sister Lenchen-Marié, the two responsible for building the igloo, to determine how they did it.

‘Using a lunch tin to make the blocks, the whole trip took them about 10 hours, including building the igloo, which they couldn’t quite complete because they didn’t want to come back down the hiking trail in the dark,’ said Snow Report SA on their Facebook page.

‘We think their igloo is an amazing effort and this is the kind of thing that keeps our job interesting!’
