WATCH: Slain rugby star Lindani Myeni’s memorial service

A number of those in attendance wore #justiceforlindani T-shirts

UPDATE: 12pm, 6 May 2021

IT was fitting that the memorial service of Lindani Myeni (29) was held at the place where he shed much blood, sweat and tears during his illustrious rugby career at the Empangeni Rugby Football Club.

Hundreds of community members, as well as friends and family came out to pay tribute and say their final goodbyes to the uMbombo prince who was slain by Honolulu police responding to a 911 burglary call.

The message that echoed across the rugby field was that Lindani was a gentle giant, a loving and caring father, and compassionate husband to widow Lindsay and father to children Lindeni and Nsizwa.

Echoing the sentiment that he was taken too soon, many acknowledged the talent and skill Lindani had as a rugby player, and the pride he felt for his Zulu culture.

A number of people in attendance said they are seeking answers, and demand justice for the slain rugby star.
Lindani’s body will finally be laid to rest after a funeral service at uMfolozi eSikhawini TVET College on Saturday at 10am.

The memorial service was attended by political heavyweights KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala, City of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo and MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela.

Zikalala delivered a sincere message of condolence to the Myeni family, following Cllr Mhlongo’s message of support.

Samoan friend Celester Asuega said that Lindani was the best friend he ever had and it did not take long for them to get along as they shared a similar culture.

‘We became really close friends and enjoyed each other’s company,’ said Celester.

‘Lindani was a hard working person who was heart warming and who just wanted to talk about and enjoy life. He will be difficult to forget.

‘He is the reason I want to start a family, and will be my brother forever.

‘Lindani, I promise I will watch over your kids Lindeni and Nsizwa, and will come back to South Africa at some point in my life.’

FAMILY and friends will have the opportunity to pay their final respects to 29-year-old Lindani Myeni, who was shot and killed by Honolulu police last month.

A memorial service will be held at 10am at the Empangeni Rugby Football Club today (Thursday).
