Winter season to impact KZN dam levels

'We have some districts which are still experiencing the effects of drought'

Residents are being urged to continue using water sparingly ahead of the dry winter season, which is expected to have a major impact on KZN’s dam levels.

While heavy rains have been a much-needed boost for the supply system these past few weeks, the KZN Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) says some districts are still experiencing water challenges.

‘We have some districts which are still experiencing the effects of drought, and this is a major concern for the department,’ said DWS spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.

Areas most affected include Uthukela, Umzinyathi, Amajuba, Zululand, King Cetshwayo and Umgungundlovu districts.

He said the department is, however, working on several short-, medium- and long-term interventions designed to mitigate drought effects in these districts.

‘One of the short-term measures is ensuring that the water tanks we provided this time last year are always filled up with water, to enable communities who continue to experience inconsistent water supply to have water,’ he said.

According to the latest figures released by the department, Hluhluwe dam levels remain above the 100% mark. The dam, which was at 100.1% a week ago, increased to 101.4% last week.

Goedertrouw dam near eShowe also increased slightly to 74.5% compared to the previous week’s 74.4%. Pongolapoort is currently at 55.7%.

Speaking during National Water Week observed from 15 to 22 March, KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Sipho Hlomuka said the province’s water supply remains low as a result of the water scarcity and uneven rainfall in most parts of KZN.

‘When we reflect on the importance of water and how we utilise it, we plead with all residents to continue to use water sparingly.

‘Conserving water means using our water supply wisely and being responsible. It will also protect our water resources for generations to come,’ said Hlomuka.
