Two swept away crossing uThukela River

The two were swept by the raging river when trying to cross it to Nkandla.

Disaster management teams from the Ilembe district are searching for an eight-year-old boy and his father who were swept away in the uThukela River near Kranskop in Maphumulo Municipality last Friday.

KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka said the two were swept by the raging river when trying to cross it to Nkandla.

He said search and rescue teams have been deployed, and urged community members not to intervene as water levels are dangerous and pose a risk to life should untrained individuals attempt to cross.

In the northern parts of the province – uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Zululand districts – heavy rains continue, resulting in a number of roads being flooded. Because of this, Hlomuka has appealed to parents and teachers to ensure their children use safe routes when getting to school.

‘People need to exercise extreme caution as inclement weather conditions are expected to continue across KZN,’ he said.

‘We are also appealing to motorists to drive carefully because the roads are dangerous when wet.’
