McGregor and Poirier fight on Sunday

The Notorious Connor McGregor makes his return on Sunday in the MMA ring

SOCIAL media platforms exploded following with news the UFC 257 has scheduled a Conor McGregor v Dustin Poirier main event match-up at Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island early Sunday morning. This is set to be a fight eliminator for the UFC’s lightweight belt.

‘The Notorious’ Irishman scored a first-round knockout win over Poirier in 2014, but both fighters have grown since then, garnering solid wins and moving up in weight.

McGregor, who boasts a professional record of 22 wins and 4 losses, is coming out of retirement to take on Poirier for the second time in his career.

After repairing a fractured relationship with UFC boss, Dana White, it’s a different McGregor set to take the ring, having dropped the ‘bad boy’ image, including the infamous ‘smack talk downs’ that typically accompanied a fight build-up.

He only fought once last year, where he picked up a 40 second TKO win over Donald Cerrone.

Poirier has a professional record of 26 fights, 6 losses and one no-contest, and is no stranger to main card events. A win here will most likely set up a title shot against retired champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who said he might come out of retirement if he sees something special this weekend.

The action will be broadcast live on SuperSport Action, Grandstand and Variety 3. Prelim fights begin at 3am, with the main card scheduled to start at 5am.
