BLOGGING THE VIEW: Black Friday shopping tips in the time of Covid-19

Black Friday has finally arrived, but before you storm the shops with the masses, check out these tips for sales shopping in 2020

Considered to be the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday attracts thousands of discount-seeking shoppers through the doors of retail operations across the globe.

However, with the Covid-19 pandemic still very much with us – coupled with the fact that many need discounted offers now more than ever – 2020 could be quite a tricky Black Friday to navigate.

Here are 5 tips to guide you through the process.

Opt for online
If there’s any possibility that you can shop online rather than in-store, it’s certainly the safer option. With the ongoing pandemic, it’s likely there’ll be fewer in-store promotions than would usually be found on Black Friday.
Remember that the current lockdown regulations allow for only 50% of the usual capacity to ensure appropriate distancing, so you’re likely to be waiting in much longer queues than usual.
And if you miss out on the Black Friday deals, you can log on for Cyber Monday on 30 November.

Check for ongoing discounts
Because of the financial struggles experienced by so many this year, most major retailers have opted for ‘Black November’ deals, which means that you probably have the entire weekend to get the discounted price.
If you’re able to find that item you really want, check whether it’s available throughout the weekend and maybe wait a day if possible.

Check social media
With the surge in online shopping and consumer engagement, most retail operations are looking to drive their social media pages – and they’re using Black Friday as a way to do this.
Check your favourite retailer’s Facebook page and social media feeds to uncover any exclusive promotions for ‘fans’ of their posts.
This could help you save even more this Black Friday.

Sign up for rewards programmes
Most big retailers run loyalty programmes which require you to sign up for a card.
Through this, you’ll have access to further discounts as well as alerts regarding upcoming sales.
This is a beneficial way to save some money while shopping, even beyond Black Friday.

Check the policies
Remember that, aside from attracting customers through the doors, Black Friday is a great way for retailers to get rid of stock that’s just not moving.
This is either because it’s out of fashion, it’s about to be replaced by a newer model, or it’s already been returned.
Although this is not always the case, you must be sure to check the store policy regarding exchanges so you’re not caught out.

BONUS TIP!
Stick to your budget. It’s been a tough year, and even if there’s a bit saved up in your bank account, the economy is still down and it’s best to be prepared for tougher months ahead.
Get items you really need at a discounted price, but don’t get lured into buying unnecessary items just because they’re there.
And remember that no sale is worth risking your life! If you are venturing out today, then ensure all Covid-19 precautions are followed – sanitise, social distance, and mask up!
