Emerging farmers trained to improve production

Zululand-led agricultural tour unpacks broiler poultry value chain

THE recent Success Way Agri-Tour – from Richards Bay to Pietermaritzburg – unpacked the broiler poultry business for 20 emerging farmers.

The self-funded tour, led by agricultural enthusiast and businesswoman, Nompumelelo Ndlela, welcomed participants from Vreyheid, Durban and Pietermaritzburg to the training session at Nyonende Farm Hatchery.

This included outlining the complete value chain, how to start a broiler poultry business, and establish a market for broiler chickens.

Other topics covered included:
– Production
– Feeding animals
– Diversified farming systems tailored to poultry
– Hydrophobic farming
– Farming other commodities including cattle, sheep and goats.

‘Success Way wants to assist the district in aggressively implementing agriculture as an urgent recovery plan for the economy,’ said Ndlela.

‘People are not interested in expensive commodities, everyone is looking at food security.’

She said the growing demand for food prompted the training which assists farmers in maximising production.

‘With the high unemployment rate, it is imperative that every young person must know how to cultivate the land, and breed animals. It is so exciting to have so many young people working with produce and poultry, and they are now making money.’

She said the impact of Covid-19 had resulted in further unemployment and hunger, and that the solutions-driven training would enable people to make agriculture a primary income source.
