Encourage children to play and learn outdoors

Outdoor Classroom Day 2020 encourages outdoor play to improve children's learning and health

SYMPHONIA for South Africa (SSA) encourages communities across the country to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play on Outdoor Classroom Day this Thursday.

The non-profit organisation’s long-term aim is for children to play and learn outside every day.

This is the third year that SSA is leading the movement in South Africa.

Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them in learning and leads to a greater connection with nature.

Play is key, as it not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, but is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.

With today’s advanced technology and lifestyle changes, children spend less time playing and learning outdoors.

Through Outdoor Classroom Day, schools have the opportunity to spearhead a shift in the way children spend their days by influencing policymakers.

If children develop a love for the natural world, they will start taking action to protect it.

School principals, teachers and school administrators need to establish a routine of regular outdoor activities for their pupil.

Schools already involved in outdoor learning have the opportunity to inspire others around the country to join.

Parents can play an integral role too by offering extra support to the schools their children attend.
