Carcass dumping poses a health hazard in Empangeni

Pedestrians using Empangeni's Biyela Street walkway had to contend with the overwhelming stench of death in the air

PEDESTRIANS using Empangeni’s Biyela Street walkway last Monday morning had to contend with the overwhelming stench of death and the sight of maggot-infested cow remains which were illegally dumped in the area.

This illegal carcass dumping, which poses a serious health hazard, is the second such Empangeni-based incident the ZO has reported on in recent weeks.

Commuters near Logan Road reported sightings of a cow carcass in a nearby empty field.

‘We will have to look into this matter and address it with by-law enforcement teams as this is becoming an issue,’ said City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane.

‘We encourage the public and street vendors affected to report it.’

Empangeni Ward 23 councillor, Andre de Lange, confirmed that the Logan Road carcass was removed the same day he reported the issue to the municipal waste department.

‘We will take this matter up with the acting municipal manager and relevant by-law teams to ensure we sort out this ongoing issue,’ said De Lange.

The public can report such matters to the by-law team on the 24-hour hotline 035 9075760, De Lange’s Ward 23 Facebook page or via WhatsApp
078 0781491.
