National Freedom Party project co-ordinator gunned down at her home in Mtubatuba

Local leadership and Tendele Mining have issued a joint statement condemning the 'senseless killing'

RUMOURS are rife in the Ophondweni area near Mtubatuba after the NFP’s project co-ordinator for uMkhanyakude was shot and killed inside her home on Thursday night.

The murder occurred shortly after the victim, Fikile Ntshangase (63) returned home from a ward 10 by-election planning meeting in Hluhluwe.

Local leadership, stakeholders and Somkhele mine issued a joint statement yesterday (Friday) following the murder, and said they ‘unconditionally condemn violence’ and have been working with different spheres of government in the province to ensure peace and stability in the area.

The statement, signed by Inkosi Luke Mkhwanazi of the Mpukunyoni Traditional Council, members of the Mpukunyoni Community Mining Forum (MCMF), former Mtubatuba mayor Qhina Mkhwanazi and Induna LX Mkhwanazi of the Ophondweni area, among others, called for calm in the community to allow the law to take its course.

‘We urge all parties to remain calm and to co-operate where possible, to bring an end to the escalating violence.’
