Man accused of attempting to chop off girl’s head is remanded in custody

The suspect was denied bail

THE bail hearing of a 39-year-old man accused of attempting to chop off the head of a Grade 11 schoolgirl has been postponed to Friday, 27 November.

Muzikayise Vumase of the Velabusha area in uMhlabuyalingana, appeared in the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for his bail application.

Vumase confessed he was hired by a traditional healer to supply him with a human head.

According to the victim’s father, Pram Qwabe, his 21-year-old daughter survived a brutal attack last month while asleep in her apartment.

‘My daughter fell asleep after studying in her rented apartment near the school. I heard that the suspect, armed with a bush knife, entered her apartment with the intention of chopping off her head. By the grace of God she managed to escape the attack and ran to her neighbours for help.

‘She suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Manguzi Hospital before being transferred to Ngwelezana Hospital. She received 12 stitches,’ said Qwabe.

‘As parents, we are traumatised about the attack, even though she is recovering well.’

Qwabe said he tracked down the suspect the following day and handed him over to the police.

‘He confessed to the police that he was requested by a traditional healer from the Skhemelele area in uMhlabuyalingana to get a human head, for which he promised to pay R35 000.’
