Police officer convicted for double murder

The double murder occurred in December 2018

A POLICE officer accused of shooting dead two wedding guests and leaving two critically injured during a traditional ceremony in the Mnqobokoza area near Hluhluwe in December 2018, was sentenced to 33 years in jail by the Mtubatuba Regional Court last Thursday.

Police constable Lindani Liberty Ngobese (34), was found guilty of the murder of May Nsele (36) and Mthembeni Zikhali (27), and was also convicted for the attempted murder of the Ntuli siblings, Mlungisi and Siyabonga.

At the ceremony, an argument ensued between Ngobese and a group of men, which led to him firing shots with his service pistol.

At the time, he was attached to the National Intervention Unit (NIU) in Durban.

He handed himself over to Hluhluwe police after the shooting, claiming he had acted in self-defence.

KZN Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Elaine Zungu, said the violent behaviour displayed by Ngobese was unwarranted.

‘Society looks to police officials for safety and protection,’ she said.

‘Instead, the accused was responsible for the loss of innocent lives.’
