Trafficking in persons under the spotlight this week

TIP is a crime that ruthlessly exploits women, children and even men for numerous types of activities

COMMEMORATING Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Week this week, local human trafficking awareness project Freedom Generation also celebrates its fifth year promoting education and awareness at schools, clubs, businesses and in society at large.

Founder, Pastor Caroline Pitout, said the organisation was officially established in 2015 but was doing prevention work prior to this.

Focusing primarily on awareness campaigns, the organisation does not deal directly with victims or policing efforts, but has received numerous calls, tip-offs and leads which are then, in turn, passed on to the relevant authorities.

This week they will be engaging in efforts to promote TIP awareness and undertake pamphlet distributions at traffic intersections in collaboration with SAPS and other non-profit organisations.

TIP is a crime that ruthlessly exploits women, children and even men for numerous types of activities, including all forms of slavery or practices similar to slavery, sexual exploitation, forced labour, child labour, servitude, the removal of body parts and the impregnation of a female person against her will for the purposes of selling the child.

While trafficking occurs across international borders, it can also occur within the borders of a country.

‘We have reached more than a million people so far through our different media platforms and awareness engagements in schools and elsewhere, as well as through our resource materials which have been rolled out across the country.

‘We are available to work in collaboration with other organisations to promote awareness,’ said Pitout.
