Melmoth police seek robbery victim

Anyone who knows the woman's whereabouts can contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Sibusiso Zikalala

Melmoth police believe the woman on the accompanying photograph can assist them in solving a case of common robbery which occurred in Melmoth last year.

King Cetshwayo cluster police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, says the 79-year-old woman from Melmoth withdrew cash from the bank, and was bumped into by another woman while she was crossing the road to a supermarket.

‘Another woman approached and told her the person who had bumped into her was using muthi to take all her money, even the remaining cash in her bank account.

‘The victim was told to go with her so that she could assist her in preventing her money from being stolen. The victim complied and followed the suspect to a car with two occupants inside,’ said Mdlalose.

‘The victim alleged that the three suspects drove her to an ATM in eShowe, where they told her to withdraw all her money. They placed the money in a brown envelope and returned to the car.

‘There they gave her an envelope, later found to contain paper, and told her they were police officials and had to rush to attend to a similar case in Mandeni. They told her to take a taxi back to Melmoth.

‘When the victim discovered she had been robbed, she reported the matter to Melmoth police and a case of common robbery was registered for investigation.

‘We believe that the woman in the photo can assist us to solve this case. We urge her to come forward.

‘Anyone who knows her whereabouts can contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Sibusiso Zikalala, on 078 0175663, or call the police emergency number on 08600 10111,’ Mdlalose said.
