Richards Bay crime spike makes home security a priority – SAPS

It is critical to ensure alarm systems are working

RICHARDS Bay police have implemented crime awareness interventions following the spike in residential burglaries and home invasions in the past month.

Richards Bay SAPS communications officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, is encouraging ‘target hardening’ – making a home more difficult to break into – by improving security measures.

‘Hardening your home is a combination of little things that work to deter criminals from even trying to break in,’ she explained.

‘If they do, they are more likely to quit from frustration.’

Some of the safety measures include installing alarms and cameras, as well as basic steps like ensuring all entry points are kept locked to deter opportunistic criminals. Burglar gates should be fitted to all sliding doors.

‘It is also critical to ensure alarm systems are working, and adding alarm sensors in ceilings will beef up security.’

Captain Ferreira said the first line of defence is deterrence.

‘Security systems and dogs will discourage intruders, and will also alert residents to activities outside the premises.’
