Suspect nabbed with police uniforms

He was arrested during a routine stop-and-search, and found in possession of a firearm, ammunition and police uniforms

POLICE have arrested a 24-year-old suspect for possession of an illegal firearm, ammunition and police uniforms.

He was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) by Melmoth police during a crime prevention exercise in the Ndudulu area.

Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said the suspect was arrested on the R66 highway after a minibus taxi was stopped and searched.

‘One of the passengers had a bag on his lap. He was searched and a pistol with five rounds of ammunition was found holstered on his waist,’ said Gwala.

‘When police searched his bag, a police uniform was found and he failed to provide an explanation of how he got it.

‘He was immediately arrested and taken to Melmoth police station for detention.

‘He was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of a police uniform.’

The man appeared in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court today and was remanded in police custody pending further investigation.
