NSRI appeals to the public to be water wise when lockdown restrictions are lifted

Exercise caution and adopt a safety mentality when beaches reopen

THE National Sea Rescue Insitute (NSRI) is appealing to the public to be ‘water wise’ and exercise caution when government lifts the restrictions on beaches and inland waterways.

By adopting a safety conscious mindset, many lives will be saved once lockdown restrictions are gradually eased.

Individuals are urged to not go and swim, paddle, sail or go boating under the influence of alcohol.

The NSRI urged paddlers and sailboarders to be cautious, and to take into consideration fitness levels and competency levels that may have been reduced during lockdown restrictions.

Bathers must use beaches that are manned by lifeguards.

People must also still maintain social distancing, wear masks and sanitise hands.

Anglers fishing along the shoreline must keep a safe distance to avoid danger and never turn their backs to the sea. They must be aware of high tides, low tides and spring tides.

NSRI appeal to boaters to ensure their boat engines are serviced and in good working order, and boaters and paddlers must wear life-jackets while on the water.

Safety equipment needs to be checked and up to standard.

Having an emergency plan in place before launching, and letting a responsible person know the departure time, route and return time, is crucial.

Before launching to sea, it is critical to download and make use of the NSRI RSA SafeTrx free cellphone app.

NSRI stations around the country and supporting water rescue agencies and emergency services continue to remain on alert to respond to emergencies.

People are advised to have the NSRI emergency number (087 0949774) on their phones.
