South African Navy to conduct drills at Richards Bay’s Naval Island

This is in preparation for any security risk in the northern coast of the Indian Ocean

THE South African Navy will be conducting exercises, code-named ‘Imvubu’, at Naval Island during the month of June, and have set up their base on the island.

This is in preparation for any security risk in the northern coast of the Indian Ocean and to support SADC (Southern African Development Community) region countries if requested.

The navy identified Richards Bay’s Naval Island as the best location for the exercise and the most strategic point to respond swiftly to any security threat in the northern coastal countries such as Mozambique.

A delegation led by Admiral Jabulani Mbotho was last week received by uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Cllr Dudu Sibiya, Chief Whip Cllr Manie Lourens and Speaker Cllr Slondile Mkhize at the Richards Bay Civic Centre.

Throughout their stay in the Port of Richards Bay, the navy will also be providing assistance to the SAPS in enforcing Operation Notlela (lockdown) around the city.
