Intense investigations into Mtubatuba councillor’s murder

Philip Mkhwanazi was reportedly approached by the two gunmen who posed as residents asking for a proof of residence letter

MONDAY’S brutal murder of Mtubatuba PR councillor and induna Philip Mkhwanazi, has been condemned by provincial government structures.

Mkhwanazi (59) was shot and killed by two unknown assailants while having his van repaired by mechanics.

One of his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, said his security detail was not present when the gunmen attacked.

‘It suggests his attackers were monitoring his movements closely, as they knew that we were not with him,’ said Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi said the Induna had earlier in the day received a land invasion complaint from one of the residents.

‘While the mechanics were fixing his bakkie, he sent us to attend to that complaint. While en route we were informed about the attack.’

Mkhwanazi said the Induna was apparently approached by the two gunmen who posed as residents asking for a proof of residence letter, as they wanted to open a bank account.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Sipho Hlomuka, condemned the senseless murder.

‘We are saddened by the loss of yet another foot soldier in the battle to bring adequate services closer to our communities.

‘The murder of a public representative is tantamount to the subversion of democracy because councillors are servants of the people elected directly by the people,’ Hlomuka said.
