Additional extension to expired drivers’ licences

The validity period will be extended for a further 90 days from 1 June

FOLLOWING the extended lockdown period, motorists whose drivers’ and vehicle licences expired since the onset of lockdown will now have an extended period of grace before needing to renew.

At the start of the country’s initial 21-day lockdown, the Department of Transport issued a directive whereby all licences that were due to expire after 26 March would remain valid until the end of May.

Owing to the lockdown extension and the subsequent delay in the reopening of municipal traffic departments, the validity period has been extended for a further 90 days, from 1 June.

This extends to:
* Learner’s licences
* Driving licences
* Temporary driving licences
* Vehicle licence discs
* Temporary road permits
* Roadworthy certificates
* Professional driver permits

The validity of motor trade number licences that have expired during this period has been extended by a further six months.

As announced earlier in the month, driving licence centres, registering authorities and testing stations will reopen from 1 June.

These facilities must adhere to strict hygiene rules as prescribed by the government’s back-to-work regulations.
