More water tankers for Pongola
The tanks were delivered on Monday after Pongola Mayor Winnie Nhlabathi had written an urgent letter to the department, requesting additional water tanks to increase supply to local communities
THE Pongola Municipality has received 30 water tanks from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to provide local residents with adequate water supply during the national lockdown.
The tanks were delivered on Monday after Pongola Mayor Winnie Nhlabathi had written an urgent letter to the department, requesting additional water tanks to increase supply to local communities.

Nhlabathi discovered that some communities faced serious water challenges.
‘We are currently liaising with the Zululand District Municipality, which is mandated to supply water, to increase the number of water tanks so that all communities would have enough water, especially for hygiene purposes and to stop people from leaving their homes to look for water.’
The mayor said her municipality is located in a predominantly rural area and sufficient water supply remains a huge problem.
She encouraged residents to adhere to the disaster management regulations and stay indoors.
‘We have noted that some residents do not bother to adhere to the lockdown regulations. We spent the whole of last week visiting social grant payout points and encouraged people to sanitise and observe social distancing, but it is clear we still need to continue with our awareness campaigns,’ Nhlabathi said.
‘On Monday, together with various stakeholders, we embarked on an awareness campaign among farm workers to educate them about Covid-19. We also conducted a door-to-door awareness campaign among nearby communities
