Protective masks in aid of Richards Bay’s pooches

The organisation has also appealed for any cash donations during this time of disruption because of the national lockdown

A DEDICATED team of Richards Bay SPCA volunteers got together in the days before lockdown to sew and sell as many protective face masks as possible – all to raise much-needed funds for the cash-strapped organisation.

Headed up by Engela Hamman, the SPCA committee’s fund-raising officer, the team had sewn enough masks to raise R4 000 for the SPCA within a few short days.

‘This will go a long way to ease our financial challenges during this time, especially as the public will not be able to  drop off donations at our premises,’ said SPCA Manager, Shelly Prinsloo.

While the SPCA has had to call a halt on its regular income-generating activties, which is already under major strain owing to the lockdown, employees are still hard at work looking after the animals in its care, taking in stray and abandoned animals, and attending to cruelty complaints and emergencies.

The 24-hour emergency line remains in operation as normal.

‘As we are unable to generate funds during this time, we appeal to businesses and the public to assist us with cash donations in the form of EFTs,’ said Prinsloo.

‘All cash donations are tax deductible, meaning the donor can claim back from SARS using the 18A tax certificate we issue.

‘We are extremely desperate for any assistance, no matter how small or large, as we need to continue operating and paying staff salaries, as well as all other running costs.

‘As we receive no regular government support, we have to rely on donations and our own fund-raising to continue with our crucial work within Richards Bay and surrounding communities.

‘Once the lockdown comes to an end, we will be able to resume our normal fund-raising initiatives. We are just desperate during this time.

‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued supporters and all those who have already very kindly donated to us.’

Donations can be made to: Nedbank cheque account name: Richards Bay SPCA; account number: 1302024825; branch code: 130230.
