Stefan van der Walt tops the Grantleigh class of 2013 with an impressive feat of 10 distinctions

SETTING a new record for Grantleigh College was head boy and academic dux Stefan van der Walt, who scored a perfect 10 distinctions in the final IEB national senior certificate examination.

Holidaying in Plettenberg Bay, the elated 18 year-old went bungee jumping after hearing the good news.

He plans to study medicine at the University of Cape Town this year.

‘I attribute my success to hard work, eating Pronutro every morning as well as the support of my teachers and parents,’ Stefan told the Zululand Observer.

The academic dux for 2013 received distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Maths, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Information Technology, Maths P3, Advanced Programme Maths, Music and Life Orientation. He was further placed in the top 1% in South Africa for Maths with a mark of 97%.

Stefan was followed by head girl Suzanne du Toit, who obtained seven distinctions and was placed in the top 1% in the country for English, Afrikaans and Life Orientation.

Emma Pennefather scooped seven distinctions while Hancke Benade, Emile Nel and Sana’a Akhtar each bagged six distinctions.

Taking home a 100% pass rate, Grantleigh College Principal Shaun McMurtry was in good spirits on Tuesday morning.

‘Matric is the gateway to further learning and it is so rewarding to us that all of our pupils can enter a university of their choice.

‘We are very proud of top achiever Stefan van der Walt with his full house of distinctions as we last year celebrated the 10th anniversary of our first matriculants. ‘We already have produced professionals in the medical, engineering and commerce fields among others,’ added McMurtry.

Of the 2013 Grantleigh class, 88% received an entry to degree study while another 12% obtained an entry to diploma study.

Among the 73 pupils, there were

116 distinctions including 32 distinctions in Maths, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences.
