Anti-poaching operation nets illegal fishing haul

Ongoing anti-poaching operations in Richards Bay see the regular confiscation of suspected poachers’ boats and gill nets

A COMBINED anti-poaching operation on Lake Mzingazi saw two suspected poachers’ boats seized, as well as 1.2km of illegal gill nets.

The operation was conducted over the weekend as a joint effort between Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and North Coast Anti-poaching (NCAP).

Apart from the seized boats and nets, 60 tilapia, 12 large barbel and some crabs were alive in the nets and returned to the lake, while more than 30 other fish were already dead.

Ongoing operations between NCAP and conservation authorities, including both Ezemvelo and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), continue to see the confiscation of boats and nets in and around Richards Bay on both inland and coastal waterways.
