THE life of ANC struggle veteran and former member of Umkhonto weSizwe, Thandi Memela, was celebrated at her home in Chesterville last week.
Memela turned 80 and her birthday coincided with that of her political home, the ANC.
Speaking at the celebration, KZN Premier Willies Mchunu thanked Memela for a lifetime of dedicated service to the people of South Africa.
‘Mama Memela, a nurse by profession, has, among many responsibilities, served as chairperson of the Veteran’s League and was a Member of Parliament.
‘She is one of the freedom fighters who fought tirelessly for the liberation of this country from oppression. We value her immense contribution to the struggle for women’s emancipation,’ he said.
