Two Westville officers in hot water

Police officers charged with bribery and corruption

TWO Westville police officers were allegedly caught red-handed taking a bribe from a truck driver last week.

The respective policemen have since been charged with bribery and corruption. It is alleged the cops were doing their crime prevention duties, when they stopped a truck along Essex Terrace road in Westville.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the policemen found an expired licence disc after conducting a search.

‘The sergeant and constable then allegedly demanded cash from the driver instead of dealing with the transgressions.

The truck driver contacted his employer asking him to deposit the cash by e-wallet.

‘The police officers then drove to a local mall with the truck driver to withdraw the money. The quick-thinking employer reported the corrupt activities to the Westville police station. Police officers from Westville SAPS immediately responded to the scene and apprehended the suspects at the mall, as they attempted to withdraw the cash. They were arrested and charged with bribery and corruption,’ said Naicker.

He said the officers were stripped of their service firearms and were both detained in the cells at the Westville police station.

‘Both officers are expected to appear at the Pinetown Magistrate Court,’ he said.
