Empangeni man sentenced for raping niece (11)

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping his 11-year-old niece.

He appeared in the Empangeni Regional Court on Friday where he was convicted and sentenced after being found guilty as charged.

According to police, in December 2017 the victim was at her home in Wildebees Street, Empangeni with her siblings when her uncle accosted her in her room and raped her.

She reported the matter to one of her siblings who then accompanied her to report the incident.

A case of rape was opened at Empangeni police station and the docket was assigned to the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.

The investigating officer did not waste time and arrested the accused the following day and he was kept in custody throughout the trial.

He made several court appearances until he was successfully prosecuted to serve to 20 years behind bars.

He is barred from working with children and his name will be included in the Sexual Offenders Register.
