Mass power outage for Richards Bay clubs

The switch-off is the result of legal action over the clubs’ municipal leases

SIX Richards Bay sport and recreation clubs currently embroiled in legal action with the City of uMhlathuze have this morning (Monday) had their electricity cut.

Richards Bay Ski Boat Club (RBSBC) was the first casualty when their lights went off at about 8.30am while the Zululand Yacht Club’s (ZYC) power went off at about 10am.

The clubs say this action is in direct contravention of both the High Court order issued in April and section 102 of the Municipal Finance Act.

Legal action earlier this year commenced after the municipality issued an intention to evict the clubs in question should they not pay the new commercial lease rates.

The matter went to the Durban High Court which issued a stay of eviction.

The ZO contacted RBSBC and ZYC, both of which said they received no notification prior to the electricity cut.

‘The City of uMhlathuze can confirm that it has terminated municipal services to some sports clubs which are in over 90 days arrears,’ said municipal spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane.

‘The services have been cut from today (Monday) after following all necessary processes including formally notifying them of their debts.’

Immediately after the electricity was switched off, the RBSBC office received an account showing a zero arrears balance.

The ZO believes the clubs to be affected are Richards Bay Ski Boat Club, Zululand Multisport Club, Meerensee Boat Club, Richards Bay Sea Scouts Club, Zululand Yacht Club and Richards Bay Rugby Club.

At least one club immediately sent an instruction to its attorneys to institute legal action.
