Area Guide: Richards Bay & Empangeni

Wetland scenery, unspoilt beaches and great weather make Richards Bay & Empangeni a great choice for those after a laid-back seaside lifestyle. Over the past 40 years the fishing village grew to a bustling city full of industry, and is often overlooked.

Close to the N2, Richards Bay and Empangeni are full of surprises. As one of the biggest coal export terminals in the world, Richards Bay often overlooked as a destination by holidaymakers and residents alike. It has however seen an increase in visitors in recent years, mostly for those from Gauteng, considering the it’s proximity and the year-round summer climate. For those looking for an even more relaxed approach, property for sale in Empangeni might be even more appealing.

Set almost halfway between Durban and Kosi Bay, Richards Bay’s famous port was established about  40 years ago, and since then the fishing village has burgeoned into a thriving seaside city. While there is a lot of mining around, Richards Bay boasts some of the most incredible wetlands and unspoilt beaches on the KwaZulu Natal North Coast, which would also explain the variety of property for sale in Empangeni.

The coast line and interior consist of sandbanks, mudflats, extensive mangroves, freshwater pans and even forests, making it any outdoor enthusiast’s dream! According to resident Elaine Chetty “The things we love most about Richards Bay are the beaches, the water sports (swimming, surfing, paddling and fishing) and the fabulous game reserves on our doorstep as well as the year-round climate.”

Tourism, however, doesn’t stop with the city’s surroundings and natural riches. Richards Bay and Empangeni have long marketed its niche by offering tours of industrial plants, mines and other operations to business and leisure visitors. Food and accommodation are of a high standard and the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront is sure to impress. Property prices seem to benefit from the growth in Richards Bay as property prices have increased by an average of 8% over the past five years.

Although some of the projects planned for the port are not materialising as quickly as hoped, there is talk of a new dry dock facility, a new container terminal and a liquefied petroleum gas terminal. Residents say the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone is bringing much-needed industry into the town.
