Learners contribute to a cleaner coast

Covering 15km of coastline the learners collected 52 bags of litter weighing 350kg

NINETY learners from five high schools bordering the Siyaya Nature Reserve, which includes the Amatikulu and Umlalazi Reserves, gathered at Umlalazi to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup campaign on Saturday.

They covered 15km of the coast line and collected 52 bags of litter weighing 350kg.

Debris picked up included 51 pieces of packaging material, 67 items of fishing gear, 52 personal hygiene waste products and 139 pieces of trash smaller than 2.5cm.

Of the unusual items found was a gas cylinder and a 1×5 metre carpet.

No dead or injured animals were found.
