Good progress on new Maputo road

The road to Ponta do Ouro is now accessible for all vehicles, not only 4x4

WORK is progressing well on the Maputo to Ponta do Ouro and Kosi Bay roads, with large sections already tarred and driveable.

The section from the Kosi Bay border post to Catembe is now complete, with the Kosi Bay to Ponta section nearing completion.

Earlier this month the road between Kosi Bay and Ponta had been graded to the market area, making it accessible for all vehicles and no longer only 4×4 vehicles.

Once complete, the new road, which encompasses Africa’s largest suspension bridge across Maputo Bay, will reduce travelling time between the Kosi Bay border post and Maputo from six hours on demanding sandy roads, to just 90 minutes.

Mozambique tourism industry stakeholders have welcomed the development as travelling conditions for the thousands of South African holidaymakers to the country will be much improved.

Others who preferred the rustic charm of sandy roads and 4×4 action to which the old road lent itself, are less pleased with the upgrades.

From a business perspective, the new road is expected to create export opportunities as well as boosting tourism in KZN.
