WATCH: Arrested eSikhaleni protesters in court

Residents awaits the outcome of a bail hearing for 13 eSikhaleni residents arrested during a protest yesterday

THE eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court is currently packed with people waiting to hear the fate of 13 people arrested during a community protest action yesterday.

The group was arrested in eSikhaleni for assembling for illegal gatherings and conducting violent protests.

Residents had planned to deliver a memorandum to the uMhlathuze mayor regarding rates increases and service delivery issues, but the protest was deemed illegal by authorities.

Police dispersed the crowd using rubber bullets and arrested some community members.

The group is expected to apply for bail this morning.

According to Golekane Movement leader Chico Langa, community members are demanding that the arrested residents be released on free bail.

‘What happened yesterday was police brutality and cops used their power to abuse residents. We can’t allow our people to be abused and be treated like dogs,’ said Langa.

‘Police arrested people who were simply walking at the mall without being involved in any protest action. They threatened our people and even the media covering the story.

‘We demand their release and if the court fails to do so, we will proceed with more protests.’
