Cele expected to reveal plans to curb Mozambique cross-border crimes

Can Cele resolve the issues of cross-border crimes plaguing the Manguzi community?

MINISTER of Police Bheki Cele will today (Saturday) address the community of uMhlabuyalingana and Manguzi to provide feedback on cross-border crimes.

In what has been an ongoing issue, dating back 10 years to when Cele was the KZN MEC for Transport, he is expected to reveal SAPS’ plans with the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) to resolve the deep-rooted problem.

This follows a visit by then Police Minister Fikile Mbalula in February to address the challenges faced by the community.

Since being reinstated as minister, Cele has vowed to clamp down on cross-border crimes throughout the country.

The ZO spoke to a member of Cele’s department, who revealed he would be prioritising an extradition treaty with Mozambican officials in order to arrest South African suspects hiding in Mozambique.

Earlier this month Cele said during a recent visit he had witnessed stolen luxury vehicles with Gauteng registration numbers driven around in Maputo.

‘They do not even change the number plates there. I won’t tell you who drives them, but I can tell you that a lot of the stolen Gauteng cars are being driven freely in the streets of Maputo.

‘I will meet with authorities there soon to attend to this issue,’ he said during a briefing.

On Tuesday two vehicles were recovered by the SANDF near the Mozambique border.

According to reports, one of the vehicles found was a Toyota Fortuner with a Pinetown registration number – a vehicle which SANDF said was one of the more popular cars targeted by theft syndicates.
