IFP retains win in Nkandla by-election

It's status quo in Nkandla by-election after closely contested polls

THE IFP retained their Ward 7 seat in the Nkandla Local Municipality by-election on Wednesday.

Their candidate, Nkosinathi Skhumbuzo Khumalo received 1 441 votes representing 53.33% with a 65.07% voter turnout.

The only candidate who challenged him was Bahle Welson Sibiya of the ANC with 1 223 votes.

The other two parties contesting the by-election were the NFP who garnered 34 votes and the EFF four votes.

The by-election follows the death of Mphumzeni Mthombeni, who secured 51.26% of the votes in the last local government elections in 2016.

Abuse of state resources

Meanwhile the IFP has opened a case against the ANC regarding the abuse of state resources on Wednesday.

‘The IFP is disappointed by the ANC’s blatant abuse of state resources for electioneering in Nkandla.

‘During the by-election in Ward 7 in Nkandla, a vehicle of the Provincial Department of Transport (KZN 12857) was transporting ANC supporters during ANC door to door campaigns.

‘This continued abuse of state resources is a contravention of the Electoral Code.

‘In spite of this ruling, the ANC blatantly continues to misuse state resources for party-political purposes in its desperate attempt to win elections,’ said IFP National Chairperson, Blessed Gwala.
