Steer clear of highway hawkers

Fake hawkers are robbing people on the N2 highway

ABOUT 10 robberies take place each week by fake vendors on the N2 highway according to Stanger police.

And as a safety precaution, Intertoll Africa has urged motorist not to stop and interact with illegal hawkers on the N2 north highway route or at any toll plaza.

Intertoll, South Africa’s largest independent toll and motorway infrastructure developer and operator, is busy with a drive to educate motorist on the route not to support hawkers as this is an unsafe practice.

Intertoll says as the festive seasons comes into full swing, the traffic on our national highways is increasing daily – and so are the number of hawkers.

These hawkers are a hazard and put their lives and the lives of motorist in danger when selling their wares at tolls or on the side of the highway.

In recent months numerous reports of hijacking and attempted hijacking have flooded the media.

Last month Richards Bay couple Chico and Umesha Subramanian had guns pulled on them and their cell phones, wallets and other personal effects stolen when they stopped in broad daylight to buy mushrooms about 10km from the Mvoti Toll Plaza.

In September last year a couple who had broken down on the side of the highway were robbed by eight men brandishing knives.
