Richards Bay lighthouse shines once again

THE erection of a high mast topped by a temporary long range beam means the Richards Bay lighthouse is once again functioning.

This as the ‘final fall’ of the eight-metre base of the old lighthouse, which stands on the brink of a huge drop down the eroded dune face, is awaited at the Mzingazi site.

When it was commissioned in 1979, the lighthouse, which has a range of 25 sea miles, stood 300 metres from the ocean.

It is now a mere two metres from the edge and with the prevailing rains and spring tides, the race against time between its dismantling and descent is ever narrowing.

Land for a new permanent lighthouse was previously secured, but no further developments or time frames have been made know.
