MEC concerned about high teen pregnancy rates

Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo says he is disturbed by the high teenage pregnancy rates in the province.

KZN MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, says he is disturbed by the high teenage pregnancy rates in the province.

Speaking at the official ceremony last week marking the name change of the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Hospital to Queen Nandi Memorial Hospital, Dhlomo said something had to be done to curb the high numbers of young girls falling pregnant.

‘I wish to appeal to you as the community to assist in raising our children with correct values. You should discourage your daughters from becoming pregnant in their teens as it is detrimental to their futures.

‘We expect to see young people in schools and in institutions of learning, not in hospitals nursing babies. Our hospitals are flooded with pregnant young women and this does not bode well for our future as a province and as a country.

‘Parents must work together with teachers in stressing the importance of putting education first,’ he said.

Dhlomo was accompanied by KZN Premier Willies Mchunu and His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini.
