Heavy sentence for cash-in-transit robber

The court handed down a 30 year prison term for two counts of armed robbery and 15 years for attempted murder

A CASH-IN-TRANSIT robber, Bonginkosi Nxumalo (33), was convicted and sentenced to 45 years imprisonment in the eShowe Regional Court last Friday.

The court handed down a 30 year prison term for two counts of armed robbery and 15 years for attempted murder.

On 1 March 2016, four suspects approached security guards who were collecting cash at one of the eShowe supermarkets.

The suspects overpowered the security guards and took an undisclosed amount of cash in boxes, as well as a rifle and a 9mm pistol.

As they left the supermarket, they opened fire and the security guards retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect.

Cash taken during the robbery was recovered after the three remaining robbers dropped the boxes while fleeing the scene.

After an intensive investigation, two suspects, including Nxumalo, were arrested and found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

One of the arrested suspects escaped from custody, but was rearrested and is still to reappear in court.

The third suspect is still at large.
