Buchanana residents feel neglected

'We were promised water and houses'

PATIENCE is running out for Buchanana residents in Ward 33, who say they are neglected by the City of uMhlathuze.

They accuse the city of failing to provide them with RDP houses and water.

One resident, Mtholephi Mkhize (45), told the ZO that his area was the only one without RDP houses, while the community struggles to get water.

‘We are unhappy with the treatment we are getting from this municipality.

‘Mayor Mdu Mhlongo visited us in May last year and promised a RDP housing development, but nothing has happened to date.

‘We were also told our water problems would be a thing of the past, but we are still receiving water only twice a month.

‘What pains us most is that our neighbouring wards such as Macekane, Sangoyana and Mevamhlophe are being provided with clean water on a daily basis.

‘As taxpayers we also have a right to receive basic services like any other community. It is our constitutional right,’ said Mkhize.

City Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane confirmed the Mayor’s visit to the area to unpack his plan for three different wards, including Ward 33.

‘It it true that the mayor made commitments to developing the three wards which previously belonged to the now defunct Ntambanana Municipality.

‘He outlined a water master plan, in which a water supply reservoir of R3-million will be built to address water challenges. He also announced the construction of 250 RDP houses for Ward 33.

‘That project will resume this financial year and is done in conjunction with the Provincial Department of Human Settlements. These projects cannot happen over night,’ said Ncalane.
