Mzingazi community shelter development gains momentum

Eagles Wing Shelter prepares for lift-off

HER vision to establish a safe haven for abused women and children is coming to fruition as Eagles Wing Shelter founder Sharon Mdletshe has her registration documents, draft plan and artist’s impression of the facility in place.

The Mzingazi community volunteer has been working round the clock rallying support from local corporates, businesses and community members to get the project off the ground.

Volunteering at the Richards Bay police station trauma room for over 18 years, Mdletshe has had first-hand experience of the violence affecting families and the impact of unemployment and crime in the area.

‘The registration documents for our NPO, tax certificate and bank account are all registered and we now need everyone to come on board and help with this project,’ said Mdletshe.

‘Last year, our organisation spearheaded a project to build a gogo and her grandchildren a house after it burnt down the previous year.

‘In December we organised a Christmas lunch for the women in our community and treated them to a fun-filled day of activities, lunch, gifts and donations of food buckets, which were donated by the Zululand Observer’s DICE (Do I Care Enough?) charity organisation.

‘The event made these senior women in the community feel special and appreciated, and this year we are rolling out other community projects which will empower them to sustain themselves financially.

‘At the centre, we will incorporate skills development programmes and income-generating projects such as beadwork, sewing and vegetable farming to help empower the unemployed in the community.’

Mdletshe said the cycle of abuse often continues because people do not have a place to seek help and her heart’s desire is to be a beacon of hope to others in need.

Donations are welcome and can be deposited into Eagles Wing Shelter’s bank account. Contact Mdlethse for details on 083 8723384.
