NRB strikers need goals galore to score

Richards Bay FC must break the goal drought on Saturday

RICHARDS Bay FC, now bottom of the log, take on mid-table Black Leopards at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Saturday, kick-off at 3.30pm.

This will bring down the curtain on the halfway mark of the 2017/2018 NFD season, hopefully on a positive note.

It doesn’t take rocket science to work out why they are in this position: they have only scored eight goals so far in 14 games.

They simply have not found the person – or combination – to finish the job.

Local fans’ minds go back to the likes of Mhlengi Cele, who banged in 18 of Thanda Royal Zulu’s record 54 goals last season, and his predecessor Ace Bhengu who also burst the back of the net with regularity.

Goal poachers – true strikers – are a breed apart. They fire on sight, they latch onto every loose ball in the box and they are selfish.

Instead of trying to pass the ball all the way into the net, it’s time for one of the NRB front men to step up and take the responsibility of shooting and scoring.

They owe it to the defenders and midfield who have toiled so well all season.

Thanda conceded 24 goals in that campaign, much on a par with NRB’s defensive record to date, but because they scored so many of their own, they lifted the title.

Bang in the goals. The points will rack up and the fans will come back.

Let’s begin the recovery on Saturday.
